Elan Rear Hub Removal Tool/Puller

By Tim Mullen; <Tim.Mullen@trw.com>

I'm not sure I get this bit, as I understand it, the hub is too fragile to have a puller fitted to it, so this bit of kit is actually placed behind the hub somehow?, or is it rather put on the outboard side of the hub? I am really having a problem visualising this! (as you can probably see!) If I can just understand how it fits together I can have a local shop fabricate one for me!

Hub "Remover" Adapter

To use the Hub "Remover" adapter, you screw it onto the hub in place of the knock-off nut/spinner (Note you need two of these, one right hand thread, one left hand). Then you attach the gear puller - the "jaws" of the gear puller are placed behind the hub remover, and the point of the gear puller's lead screw is tightened onto the threaded end of the shaft that holds the hub. Tighten the gear puller, and in theory, the hub comes off. In practice, it's on there tight. You have to apply a *lot* of torque to the gear puller screw, and heat the hub so that it expands ever so slightly, causing the "bond" to break. In my case, I did all this and it still didn't break free, so I let it set for a while (under tension) and KA-BAM!! it popped apart after about 10 minutes.
