Friday - October 3rd
WCLM Saw Mill Tour
Friday began at Seven Feathers when the WCLMers picked-up a box lunch and gathered in the parking lot enroute
to C&D Lumber.
We arrived at C&D Lumber and were greeted by it's senior staff. After a brief introduction to their operations
it was off to see huge logs get converted to lumber ready for construction.
The WCLMers were treated to see exactly how logs were de-barked in seconds. Giant circular saw sliced through logs
in seconds. And, then the lengths of logs were sent to an enormous band saw to cut them down further in to planks.
Finally, the planks were sliced into the lumber sizes we find in our local lumberyards. All of this done in a matter
of a few short minutes.
As we toured the Saw Mill we were shown how virtually every piece of a log is used, there is no waste. This is an
industry that is truly environmentally friendly. Even pieces of wood that are sub-par are sent to factories to be made
into things like pencils, the bark is used to fire power plants and smaller pieces of wood are chipped and used for
paper or composites.
SCENIC TOURS
Crater Lake Tour - After the Saw Mill tour the WCLMers broke into 3 groups, the largest headed toward Crater Lake.
In route to Crater Lake they stopped at various falls along the Umpqua river, but the weather wasn't cooperating. Rain
continued to fall most of the trip and when they actually got to Crater Lake they were turned away due to dense fog that
made impossible to see the lake and difficult to drive.
Oregon Coast Tour - The smallest group headed to the Oregon Coast! They were met with much better weather than
the Crater Lake group. They enjoyed the lush evergreen forests, picturesque coastal scenery, rugged cliffs, and famous
lighthouses of the Oregon Coastline.
Wine Tour - The 3rd group of WCLMers headed off to visit some of Oregon's finest wineries. First stop was
to the Reustle winery outside of Roseberg. There the group was met by co-owner Gloria Reustle and enjoyed their Pinot Noirs and
Tempranillos. Next stop was the Palotai winery where they enjoyed lunch and some of the fine wines offered by Palotai. The next
two stops were at the Hillcrest Winery and to Abacela. Hillcrest is the oldest winery in Oregon, established in 1961.
